If your drain setup looks something like the one shown here and the water is backing up on the side without the waste tee, you may be able to remove the clog with a bent coat hanger (opening photo). I can't figure out why my kitchen sink drain keeps clogging. First look under the sink to locate the waste tee. In human terms, our fat is the stick and our muscles are the rock. Then, see how hot water is at the faucet (give it a minute to get hot water flowing good).

Try closing the cold water shut off valve under the sink to the off position. A rule we use for scuba which works equally for snorkelling : If you are properly weighted, you should float with the water at eye level (ie floating feet down) whilst holding a normal (not full breath). If it is less dense than water, it floats. Also your upper body will float better and for longer because your lungs contain air which helps keep it up, whereas your legs will be there first part to sink. Human muscle is denser and therefore less buoyant than fat.

To float, you have to get your head almost fully immersed so that not much more than your nose is still out of the water. Obviously putting too much weight on will result in difficulty returning to the surface so that is to be avoided. But if I don't use my sink much in 2 or 3 days and then Those of us with a higher fat to muscle ratio will tend to float. My partner always complains that I can't swim or tread water very well- but I tend to be neutrally buoyant about 2 feet submerged in "swimming-temp" water but if I got below that, I rapidly sink to the bottom (presumably due to further compression of my lungs). If hot water shows up no problem then the mixing cartridge of the delta faucet should be replaced... should resolve the issue. Muscles are generally more dense than water and cause us to sink. Fat is less dense than water, party because it contains oil, which floats on water. If an object has a greater density than water, it sinks. If you have a two-bowl sink and only one side is clogged, there’s a good chance this fix will work.

Some people find it very difficult to do this and they try to elevate their head above the water.

Well, it is all down to relative density. This causes the rest of their body to sink because their head is not displacing enough water to compensate for its mass. I've bought several bottles of Draino type stuff and they work for a day or two. Fat contains water and oil and is less dense and therefore floats well. Thus fat floats.
